Julia's Father on-line info

I found these on-line references to the 1908 death of a Captain Walter H. Auble of Los Angles, aged 47.

He was married to Florence Andrews in 1888. At the time of his death he had daughters Julia, aged 16, and Gladys aged 14, and a son Earl, aged 18.

His mother was living in Savannah, Mo with her son Nathan. Captain Auble also had brothers William (a conductor for Southern Pacific) and Frank (a plumber living at 8th and Los Angeles streets) and a sister, Mrs. William Lillibridge of Rochester, Mo.

He was killed by a 'socialist' burglar who subsequently took poison to avoid hanging.

And here is a reference to the Los Angeles Police Department history site --

I am thinking that there must have been some sort of widows and orphans benefit that Florence received so that she could start the boarding house and could send Julia to Mills College.

Now we know the name of the sister she lived in old age with -- Gladys. And an uncle Earl Auble.

There is reference to Captain Walter being a member of the Westgate Masonic Temple (335) and Temple Al Malaikah Shrine. He was also a member of the Maccabees, tent No. 2 of Los Angeles.

Here is a photographic reference to Earl Auble, his son, as a Marshall for the Westgate Masonic Lodge in 1931.

Stan (my father) also was a mason -- 32nd degree (whatever that meant?).
